SpinRite is a stand-alone DOS program designed to refurbish hard drives, floppy disks and recover data from marginally or completely unreadable hard drives and floppy disks and from partitions and folders which have become unreadable. Did we just say DOS? Yes. There are certain things you really can't do properly in Windows. The explanation is that while the operating system is running it's very difficult to get access to hardware and systems which function ahead of the operating system. So using SpinRite requires a reboot and once you do that, a whole world of data recovery and long-term hard drive maintenance opens up to you.

SpinRite 6 interacts directly with magnetic storage media at a level below any installed operating system. This version is able to operate on all Windows XP NTFS formats in addition to all DOS FAT, all Linux file systems, Novell, Macintosh (if temporarily moved into a PC) or anything else. SpinRite can also be used to repair and recover the hard drive from a TiVo personal video recorder. SpinRite originally introduced the concept of non-destructive low-level reformatting and sector interleave optimization all of which basically means that the software can read, analyze, correct then rewrite every tiny bit of data on a hard drive, re-establishing the formatting, without losing any original data, without screwing up your files (they'll work better actually) or messing up your partitions (they'll work better too), or fouling up the factory low-level formatting of any hard drive. SpinRite has been under continuous development for 16 years (since v1 in 1988) and is probably the most popular disk data recovery tool on the market today.

What SpinRite is not is a file undelete or defragmentation utility. If you've ever encountered inaccessible drives or partitions, folders that won't open and drives or folders containing corrupt files, you need a tool like SpinRite. We set out to prove SpinRite 6's effectiveness by tossing it into the data recovery ring with the rest of our drive and data maintenance tools. Note that we used SpinRite in our research offices from v3 through v5, until we upgraded all of the network to Windows 2000 NTFS formatting a few years ago. The release of SpinRite v6 is welcome indeed because it fully addresses NTFS formatted drives (which was about the only thing SpinRite 5 couldn't touch).

John The Ripper (Simple Tut)

I wrote this tutorial as best I could to try to explain to the newbie how to operate JTR. Remember, this is a newbie tutorial, so I wont go into detail with all of the features. JTR is a program that decyrpts Unix passwords using DES (Data Encryption Standard).

Do these steps

Step 1: Download JTR.

Step 2: Extract JTR. In windows use winzip. In unix type

tar -xzf john-1.6.tar.gz

Step 3: In windows open the command prompt. Go to the Start menu, click Run, type 'command' (no quotes) and press enter.

You with me? Good. Go to whatever directory to have JTR in. Type 'john' and press enter. A whole list of options will come up:

You wont need most of these options. In fact, you don't really need any of these options. You can simply type 'john [filename]'. The filename must include the .txt extension. This is the regular crack. It will use bruteforce to decrypt all of the passwords in the file. If you're an impatient ass you can use a word list. This is not as effective but it's quicker (more on that later).

How to make a crackable file: Let's say that for some reason you have a DES encrypted password but no file. If you want to crack it (why else would you be here?) you need to make your own file. Just create a text file and paste in the password. Now put a username (just any old name will do) in front of it with a colon separating the two. It should look something like this:

User:gyuJo098KkLy9

Save the file as crackme.txt (just an example) and go to the prompt and type 'john crackme.txt' (no quotes obviously). Now you just have to wait.

Options:
Here are a list of the options and what they do.

-single: Single crack mode. This is only recommended for weak passwords as it includes only a few rules and a small wordlist.

Usage: john -single crackme.txt

-wordfile: Uses a wordlist (basically a dictionary attack). What this does is tries every word in the list until it finds a match or you reach the end of the list. This is quicker than the default (bruteforce) attack, but I don't recommend this because it doesn't always find a match. More notes on wordlists below.

Usage: john -wordfile:password.lst crackme.txt

-rules: Lets you define the rules for using wordlists. I don't use wordlists, so if you want to use this option I wont help you. Ok, ok, I'm just lazy. Shoot me.

-incremental: I like this method. It allows you to do a bruteforce attack
under certain modes.

Usage: john -incremental:alpha crackme.txt (only letters)
john -incremental:digits crackme.txt (only numbers)
john -incremental:lanman crackme.txt (letters, numbers, and some special characters)
john -incremental:all crackme.txt (all characters)

-external: This is a little complicated, so if you are lame don't mess with it. Basically this calls the options that are defined in the configuration settings. You can change these yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. No, I wont tell you how, go away.

Usage: john -external:[MODE] crackme.txt (replace MODE with whatever the
name of your mode is).

-restore: Ok, let's say that you need to stop the crack in the middle. Press crtl+break. A file will be created in the JTR directory named 'restore' (no quotes doofus, and yes, no file extention). You can start the crack back up from that restore point. If you used the-session option you probably have a different filename.

Usage: john -restore:restore

-session: Use this if you know that you will have to stop JTR in the middle of a crack. It allows you to create a new file that holds the data of your session. You can then restore your session later.

Usage: john -session:[save to filename] crackme.txt

-status: Shows how far you got before stoping a crack (provided you used the -session option).

Usage: john -status:[filename]

-show: Shows how many passwords have been cracked in a file and how many are left.

Usage: john -show crackme.txt

-test: Shows how fast JTR will work on your computer.

Usage: john -test

-users: Cracks the password only for the user or users you tell it to.

Usage: john -users:User crackme.txt

-groups: Cracks the passwords only for the group or groups you tell it to.

Usage: john -group:lamers crackme.txt

-shells: Cracks the passwords only for the shell or shells you tell it to.

Usage: john -shells:shelly crackme.txt

-salts: Cracks the salts that have at least the number of passwords you specify.

Usage: john -salts:2 crackme.txt

-format: JTR can decrypt many from many different formats, not just DES (but this is the most widely used one). Use this to force JTR to try a certain format.

Usage: john -format:DES crackme.txt (force DES)
john -format:BSDI crackme.txt (force BSDI)
john -format:MD5 crackme.txt (force MD5)
john -format:BF crackme.txt (force BF)
john -format:AFS crackme.txt (force AFS)
john -format:LM crackme.txt (force LM)

-savemem: this tells JTR to automatically save your process at whatever
level you specify from one to three.

Usage: john -savemem:1 crackme.txt (save at level 1)
john -savemem:2 crackme.txt (save at level 2)
john -savemem:3 crackme.txt (save at level 3)

How to use a wordlist with JTR: I'll assume you already have a wordlist in the JTR directory (it comes with password.lst, if you want to make your own I'll tell you how later). Go to the prompt and type 'john -wordfile:password.lst crackme.txt' (no quotes, damnit). If the password is in the wordlist, it will work. Otherwise, you deserve it for
using a wordlist when you have bruteforce capabilities, shame on you.

How to create a wordlist to use with JTR: First I will include a few lines of the wordlist supplied with JTR:

#!comment: Common passwords, compiled by Solar Designer.
12345
abc123
password
passwd
123456

The top line is a comment (duh). If you want to make a comment in your wordlist just follow the example. The other lines are passwords that the program will try when you use the wordlist. Put each password on a new line. In the event that you are too lazy to write your own wordlist you can download one (once again, I'm far too lazy to give you a link). It may or may not already be the right file format (.lst). If it isn't, just go to the prompt. Assuming the filename is lazy.txt, type 'rename lazy.txt lazy.lst'

Piping Output: Remember the -show option? You can get JTR to save that
output to a file. Just type 'john -show crackme.txt > crackinfo.txt'

There's my guide. I have an FAQ below:

Q: Can I mix options?
A: Yes, certain options can be mixed. You can mix options as long asthey don't clash. Play around with it a while.

Q: What does "Loaded 0 passwords" mean?
A: There was a problem with either your password file or the syntax of your command. If you force BF decryption when your file has DES encryption it wont work. If your password file isn't made right it wont work.

Q: What does "Password files required, but none specified" mean?
A: Can you read? You can't just tell JTR to crack, you need to give it a file.

Q: What does "Unknown cyphertext format name requested" mean?
A: When you use the -format option you need to check that you typed the name of the format correctly.

Q: How come when I typed 'john -users: login|uid crackme.txt' (which by the way is the usage shown in the list of option by JTR) I received this error:
Option requires a parameter: "-users:"
Bad command or file name
A: The piping symbol you used (|) can mean two different things. In this case in means 'or'. You're supposed to use login OR uid. When you type it in a dos window, you are running two separate commands.

Q: Can I speed up the bruteforce?
A: Sure, just toss that old ass box of yours and get a new one.

New features in Directory Opus 9:
• Vista Support: Vista contains a protective layer of routines known as UAC which prevents unauthorized access to parts of your system. Opus fully supports the Microsoft methods for accessing this system. For example, Opus will display the UAC prompt in most situations when it is required. UAC support in Opus has improved over that offered in Windows Explorer. For example, in Explorer if you create a new folder in a protected location (like Program Files), and then rename the newly created folder, you will get four separate confirmation dialogs. In Opus, you will just get one!
• New Explorer Replacement Functionality for Vista and XP: In order to support Explorer Replacement under Vista it has been necessary to change the way this mode is implemented. Now when Explorer Replacement mode is enabled double-clicking on a folder in ANY Explorer window will have the effect of opening in Opus. Previously, double-clicks only opened in Opus from the desktop. If you already had an Explorer window open and double-clicked on a folder in there it would read into the existing Explorer.
• New XML-based Configuration: In Directory Opus 8, most configuration information was kept in the registry – only Toolbars and some other settings were stored on disk. In Directory Opus 9, all configuration is now stored on disk in XML format.
• New Configuration Backup & Restore System:
- Full Backup & Restore configuration allows you to move configurations between machines easily.
- Export to USB Flash Drive: Opus 9 takes advantage of the disk-based nature of the new Opus configuration system and allows you to export your Directory Opus installation (including program, certificate and configuration) to a USB flash drive. The program will then run as a self-contained entity from this flash drive on another system, without modifying the registry or hard drive of the host. If you select a U3 drive, Opus will be exported as a U3 package and can be installed using the U3 LaunchPad software. If you select the standard USB device icon, Opus will be exported directly to the drive in non-U3 mode.
• New Sub-Collections: The File Collections system now supports sub-collections (that is, collections within collections). Creating a sub-collection is straight-forward – simply use the CreateFolder command to create a folder inside an existing collection. You can move files and folders between collections and sub-collections as normal. Sub-collections behave exactly like collections.
• New Breadcrumbs-style Location Field: A new “breadcrumbs”-style Path field is available in the commands list in Customize as Path Field (Breadcrumbs). It provides a hierarchical view of the current path, as you can see from the picture above. Each element in the path is a button that can be clicked to go immediately to that level of the path. Files can also be dropped on the elements. The arrows following each path element can also be clicked to display a popup menu of the contents of that folder.
• New ‘Find-As-You-Type’ Field: Opus has a new special "find-as-you-type" field in Listers and in the text viewer. It is similar to the one in Firefox and can be controlled by an option in Preferences. When you begin typing in a Lister a search box now appears at the bottom showing you what you are searching for. Scrolling to the item in the Lister still happens as before - the method is the same, only the interface has changed. The search field turns red if there is no match.
• New Custom List View Code + Tiles Mode: Directory Opus 9 replaces the old system with a new custom icon display. The four traditional icon modes are all still present, and for the most part should be indistinguishable from the previous version. However, the annoying issues with the old icon modes are gone and the performance of the new code is significantly improved.
The scrolling of Listers has also been improved greatly – scrolling with the mouse wheel is now accelerated, and details/power mode now have smooth scrolling which greatly enhances the effect of scrolling through Listers.
The custom list view code has also made possible the addition of a Tiles Mode. This is similar to the mode introduced in Explorer in Windows XP, but with a number of options not offered in Explorer.
From Preferences you can configure the Tiles display completely. The size and spacing can be altered; the frames and background color of individual tiles (turn off frames and the background color altogether to emulate the look of tiles mode in Explorer); choose whether or not thumbnails are shown in Tiles mode; configure the information displayed beneath the filename on a per-file type basis through the File Types system.
• New Advanced Rename Enhancements: The Advanced Rename dialog has had a number of improvements, the most noticeable is the addition of a Script mode.
• New Preferences Editor Improvements: Significant improvements based on user feedback include replacing the old List/Tabs interface by a new Tree view making it much easier to see which pages are available. At the bottom of the Preferences dialog there is a new Filter field. This lets you search for Preferences items matching a specified string, making it much easier to locate items than before. While many of the Preferences pages are similar to those from Opus 8, there have been a large number of changes and improvements made. Many dialogs use a new toolbar-style button system for easier control to Add/Delete/Edit items. Overall the Preferences system is more logically laid-out and easier to use for both new and old users.
• Removal of Layout section in Preferences: The old Layout sections in Preferences was the cause of some confusion and has been removed. Instead, now there is just the Default Lister concept. This concept existed in Opus 8 but it was always confused with the options in Preferences.
• New Customize Editor Improvements: The Customize dialog has been improved and includes a menu bar, the contents of which change depending on the current tab. In the Commands tab the menu contains Export and Import commands when the User command category is selected, providing a simple way of sharing User commands with others.
• New FTP Address book: The FTP section of Preferences has been split out into a separate dialog with a menu to make configuring the address book easier. The menu also contains Import & Export commands.
• New Flickr™ Synchronization: Opus now includes a Flickr Synchronization tool that makes it easy to keep your local photo collection in sync with your Flickr account. Flickr Synchronization is based upon File Collections (this is one of the main uses for the new sub-collection ability).
• New ImageShack Image Upload: Directory Opus now features a built-in ImageShack upload utility. ImageShack is an image hosting service that (with some obvious exceptions) lets you upload and host any image for free.
• New Command Parser Improvements: The command parser in Opus has been significantly improved. Perhaps the biggest change is that all the control sequences (like {file} etc) can now be used with the internal command set, without resorting to DOpusRT tricks. There are also a number of new control sequences.
• New Custom Toolbar Icon Sets: Opus now allows you to use different icon sets. A new Preferences section in Display - Toolbar Icons allows you to import and choose which sets to use in a hierarchical fashion.
• New Support for Links/Junctions: Opus now includes support for links/junctions. The Type column will display the type of link and the Description column will now show the target of junctions (and soft-links under Vista) as it does for shortcuts. The file functions know about junctions too - for example, Delete will not recurse into a junction or link to delete the contents, but instead will just delete the junction. GetSizes doesn't include the size of linked folders in its calculations, etc.

HiDownload is a multi-threaded download manager that allows you to download individual files (or lists of files) from web and FTP sites while maximizing the potential of your internet connection. It also supports multimedia streaming and and RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) with optional resume, enabling you to download movies, music and capture streaming video and audio,record radio from Internet. It also offers a tool to analyze MMS/RTSP URLs, as well as a built-in Broadcast Manager.
